Mutoid Man’s New Song Kicks Serious Ass

One of the real surprises of 2013 was the sudden emergence of Mutoid Man, a don’t-call-it-a-side-project formed by guitarist/vocalist Steven Brodsky (Cave In) and drummer Ben Koller (Converge, All Pigs Must Die, etc.). Their self titled EP was this weird little experiment in mixing pretty straightforward fuzzy rock riffs with a more modern sense of mathy, prog-y tendencies. In a scene populated by bands with no sense of levity, Mutoid Man shot out the gate as a band that was fun to listen to.

So I was excited to learn that the band kicked off 2015 by going right into the studio with producer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Kvelertak, High on Fire, etc etc) at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts to record some new tunes, bringing along their new bassist, and Saint Vitus Bar sound dude, Nick Cageo. Now that Mutoid Man was becoming more of a “real” band, with some shows and distance from the EP under their belt, I felt confident the band would go into the studio and knock out some killer tunes.

Which is what they deliver in the following in-studio playthrough for the track “Bridgeburner.” The song is pretty great, and I’m real excited to hear the rest of what the band came up with in Kurt’s den.

Mutoid Man’s as-yet-unrevealed upcoming album will be out this summer on Sargent House.
