As I’m sure you’re well aware, Glenn Fricker hates drum replacement. He thinks of it as a weak cop-out for bad drummers and wimpy engineers to claim someone else’s sound as their own. I personally disagree to an extent, and I’ll be going more into that in the future, but I do think its overuse is widespread. Many lazy engineers use them instead of getting great source tones, replacing their own sounds altogether rather than blending them for greater impact while retaining a natural sound.
Well, Glenn seems to think that those days are behind us, and now we can have our cake and eat it too with the Drum Leveler from SoundRadix. It’s more than a compressor or limiter – it analyzes the waveform and contours all the hits to be whatever level you desire and is supposedly extremely transparent. It also includes a number of other built-in features such as a gate and sidechain to make it your all-in-one drum dynamics processing plug-in.
If you’re as curious as I am about whether or not these claims are accurate, check out this video for the evidence:

As much as I agree with Glenn about real drums sounding better than samples, I don’t get this. His argument is basically, “This makes drums sound like samples without using samples.” Like he’d rather cut off his nose to spite his face.

Agreed. It’s like going through more work just to make it sound like samples in the end.

Seems like this would be less work than having to phase align your transients with your samples tho. I hate doing that.

Glenn Fricker is a doofus and his recordings sound like ass. Sweet single Tateryche song mix as a claim to fame Glenn.LOL Of course samples can sound shitty. So can real drums. At this point it’s getting to be an artistic choice. I happen to like real drums. Glenn’s recordings don’t sound like real drums. They sound like over-processed bullshit. He might as well use samples.

Any real engineer would laugh at this terrible shit. Metal recordings might as well be EDM productions at this point. Learn how to put a fucking mic on something and learn how to mix it and stop being such a narcissistic control freak over your performances. They sound canned and bad.
