The music of Deftones has never been about any kind of technicality, but about that crushing moment when the driving, groovy verse is obliterated by a monolithic chorus. The ability to play extremely groovy and subtle, but also play extremely heavy, has long been a skill exhibited by Abe Cunningham.
As an aid to this process, Tama Drums is releasing a signature snare for the man who has sat behind the kit for 25+ years of Deftones history. It’s a 14″ x 6″ brass vented shell with 4 holes for increased volume. Made in Japan, this is a premium snare that will run you no less than $899. Pricey, to be sure – that’s more than my entire drum kit. But watch the video and see for yourself if it might be worth it….

I can’t figure out why this drum ($899) is more than twice the price of the typical “signature model snare”.
Others seem to have the right idea: (prices from musiciansfriend)
Gretsch Taylor Hawkins snare $199
Pearl Chad Smith snare $239
Sonor Phil Rudd snare $399
Mapex Chris Adler snare $399

If anyone’s technical in Deftones, it’s this man.
