The Black Dahlia Murder are a band known for their technicality and relentless brutality. One of the most distinguishing parts of their sound comes from vocalist Trevor Strnad’s unique vocal style. Whether it be deep death metal growls or blood-curdling shrieks, the man knows how to work the ol’ pipes. And now he has graced the internet with a “how-to” video of sorts via Metalsucks, detailing his process for getting his growls to sound the best. You might learn something! Also, he takes his shirt off.
In the interview, Trevor talks to our host Phil Boozeman (of course) about the proper ways to do death growls. He demonstrates some of the techniques he emplores like gargling whiskey, adorning an American Satan mask, doing the classic “hee haw” exercise, and eating like, I dunno, twenty fuckin’ Ricolas. All of these techniques combined help to get Trevor’s signature vocals to where they need to be. It’s all very serious and should not be taken lightly.
On his vocal warm-ups, Trevor had this to say:
“Yeah. Wow.”
Truer poetry has never been heard.
TBDM is currently preparing for their Nightbringers North America Tour 2017 with bands like Suffocation, Decrepit Birth, Exhumed, and more. Dates and deets can be found below, and you can order your tickets here. Be sure to try and catch them so you can see Trevor’s vocal genius live in action. He will probably also take his shirt off.
