Ask a Producer: Phase Relationships Between Multiple Microphones

One of the most common, misunderstood tools in an engineer’s toolbox is how to record a guitar amp with multiple microphones. If done properly, you can really round out your guitar sound – by using multiple microphones with different sonic qualities on the same amplifier – without having to re-track or use a different amp.

So for this installment of Ask a Producer, I enlisted Backroom Studios owner and The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Kevin Antreassian to share some of his thoughts on the subject. Check out the tutorial we made below, and level up your guitar recording game!

If you’re interested in this stuff and DEP, I’d also highly recommend checking out Ben Weinman and their producer Steve Evetts’ CreativeLive course, which included some thoughts on this subject.
