NAMM 2014: DW’s Icon Snare Drums Honor Queen, Rush, and Pink Floyd

Some snares are not for hitting. Some you just admire. In fact, if you gig with one of these snares you may just be a lunatic. I don’t even know how much they cost, but they can’t be cheap. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

DW created, in a very limited supply, these three Icon snare drums, honoring three of the most influential drummers in rock: Queen’s Roger Taylor, Rush’s Neil Peart, and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason. You could be forgiven for thinking the designs, at a distance, are paint on wood, or a wrap, but no. Individual pieces of dyed wood are painstakingly assembled together like some swiss watch that plays the 2 and 4 instead of 1 through 12. We pan to a display of the individual components early in the video as Mr. DW describes the design to us. Holy damn, that’s some painstaking work.

The proceeds from each drum go to that drummer’s respective charity of choice, so if you want the God-King of all snare drums and have the cash to spend on it, well this would make a hell of a gift…. to me.

Chris Alfano has written about music and toured in bands since print magazines and mp3.com were popular. Once in high-school he hacked a friend's QBasic stick figure fighting game to add a chiptune metal soundtrack. Random attractive people still give him high-fives about that.
