About the meaning of the track, the band has made this statement:
“Opiate” is the third single from Fearless. It’s about addiction and the frustrations that come from being stuck in the same cycle. Every day, more than 130 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids alone. These days it feels like we all know someone who has been affected by this crisis. Friends, friends of friends.. some of us have battled with addiction first hand. You are not alone. We can beat this. We can be fearless.”
