Like the rest of you, I’m chomping at the bits to hear new material from ex-Ocean members Jona Nido and Luc Hess. I was a huge fan of their playing on the Ocean records, and loved their collaboration with Red Fang, Red Kunz, so I’ve been excited to hear what their new project Closet Disco Queen sounds like.
It’s pretty different from the guys’ previous bands – this material is much more in the vein of classic power-chord 70’s rock (particularly of the German variety) and prog, but also has a driving punk edge. Although I’d prefer to eschew genre labels in talking about these guys, who are fantastic musicians with a ton of personality, what I love about this band is that the overall simple style of the music and the duo-format allows them to let loose a bit, to play to the song rather than the other way around.
Check out an example of what I’m talking about, in their studio playthrough of the song “The Shag Wag,” below:
Closet Disco Queen’s debut drops on June 12th through Hummus Records, Division Records and This Charming Man-Records. Pre-order your copy here.
