From production, songwriting, technicality, and just plain out-there standpoints, Artificial Brain’s Labyrinth Constellation was one of the highlights of metal in 2014. Artificial Brain play an utterly unique blend of black metal, death metal, and prog/tech that I won’t try to describe – just listen. Additionally, courtesy production stylings of Colin Marston (Gorguts, Dysrythmia, Liturgy), the band have an added dimension of rawness. As in, this doesn’t sound like trash can/mini-Marshall black metal, and it also doesn’t sound like overly slicked Roadrunnercore prog.
One of the reasons for this is that the band members can actually… play their instruments. Alongside Revocation guitarist Dan Gargiulo, Artificial Brain’s other guitar half, Oleg Zalman, is a beast. We’ve covered him before… when he covered Baring Teeth. Still unconvinced? Check the dude’s playthrough of “Frozen Planets,” which, we should probably mention, is in standard tuning (on a 7-string):

Intriguing stuff. I feel like you gotta be in the mood for the cacophonous ambiance in order to fully appreciate it. Honestly I’ve never heard anything quite like it. Bookmarking these guys!
