Noisey Just Posted this Great Interview with Kurt Ballou

I like to give credit where credit is due, and Noisey just posted a really interesting interview about Converge’s Kurt Ballou and his tone evolution over the years. I for one had no idea that a Traynor YRM-1 was a cornerstone of his tone for years. I’m also sure that every Converge fan that plays guitar will now be attempting to track down a Sparrows Sons amplifier.

And I have to say I totally agree about the perception of volume being more important than actual levels. Anything can be loud, but finding a tone that sounds “big” at reasonable volumes is way tougher. Of course, testing and comparing different speakers is about as easy as comparing pickups, which is to say that it’s not. Unless you have two identical cabs with the same speakers, or you’re best buddies with a wizard.

Chris Alfano has written about music and toured in bands since print magazines and mp3.com were popular. Once in high-school he hacked a friend's QBasic stick figure fighting game to add a chiptune metal soundtrack. Random attractive people still give him high-fives about that.
