Metallica to Shred Antarctica – With NO AMPS?

Metallica has been making waves with their declaration to play on Earth’s final frontier – the frozen reaches of Antarctica. But according to a statement on their website, “We’ll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification.” No amplification? Surely you jest.

I imagine that the scientists working down there warned them that if the penguins hear the word YAYEAAAAAAHH!!! they will go into a homicidal frenzy.

This ought to be interesting – I’m gonna need to see a video of this when it happens. Like, a video from someone standing there just hearing the sound in the room. I imagine it would be something like this, but without the guitar:

In all seriousness though, I wonder what they’ll be playing through if not their usual Mesa/Boogie and Randall rigs? Line6? Fractal? Or maybe they’ll use their usual rigs through something like the Two Notes Torpedo. Will Lars play V-Drums? I’d be damned interested to see how they transmit the sound to a whole crowd of in-ears!
