A “Groove Analysis” of Mastodon’s “Chimes at Midnight” Beats

Were you aware that Mastodon’s “Chimes at Midnight” utilizes a hybrid rudiment called the “herta?” Because I sure as hell didn’t. Drum! Magazine’s Nate Brown did this great groove analysis of this tune from the forthcoming Mastodon record Once More ‘Round the Sun.

Not only does he demonstrate the beats as Brann Dailor plays them, at full speed and way slower of course, but he also goes over a couple alternate applications of the rudiments involved. So if you want to start your next beat with some Brann flakes you can do so.
