Review: sE Electronics Voodoo VR1 Passive Ribbon Microphone

Here’s two things that will get any recording nerd to geek out: ribbon mics and Rupert Neve. sE Electronics recently combined the two when they released the Neve signature RNR1 Ribbon Mic.

Now they’re back with the Voodoo VR1 Passive Ribbon Microphone, which has a similar design philosophy behind it. Both take the classic ribbon fatness but avoid the usual high-end roll off, so you’ll still hear plenty of audio information above the 15k range. However, unlike the RNR1, the VR1 can be had for well under a grand: the average street price is $699.

We put the mic through its paces on guitar and bass in our review below.

Chris Alfano has written about music and toured in bands since print magazines and mp3.com were popular. Once in high-school he hacked a friend's QBasic stick figure fighting game to add a chiptune metal soundtrack. Random attractive people still give him high-fives about that.
