Hey, remember when we all had a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone as teenagers? Yeah, go watch videos of your old metalcore band from 2006 cranking one of those through a Crate amplifier and let us know how you sounded.
Though as bad a reputation the MT-2 gets, it turns out blues legend Joe Bonamassa is still a huge fan. In the new issue of Guitarist magazine, Bonamassa expressed his love of the pedal, saying it’s his go-to for a grittier tone.
“My favourite BOSS dirt pedal – and I know this is going to sound really fucking strange – is the [MT-2] Metal Zone,” he said. “Being a child of the ’80s, I really dug the Metal Zone. I was a Metal Zone guy. I thought you could get some cool midrange things out of it with a clean amp. Just because it’s called the Metal Zone, that doesn’t mean you need to run the gain all the way up.”
Bonamassa’s last thought is likely what got us all into the world of shitty tone – cranking up the Metal Zone to the max sounded awful. Though strangely, cranking up the HM-2 created a whole new genre… so who knows. The bottom line here is that everyone is probably about to run out and get a Metal Zone.
The good news is that if you’re looking for a Metal Zone, they’re still widely available. The usual Metal Zone is available for $99.99, while the Waza Craft version is available for $159.99.
