Bill Kelliher from Mastodon Recounts the Creation of his “Dissonant Aggressors” from Lace Pickups

Lace Pickups have been making some waves lately with a lot of really solid artist endorsements, and signature pickups from some heavy hitters like Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds. The unifying thread seems to be guitarists who have one foot in the modern scene and one in a more midrange-based ’70s style world: Bill and Brent, plus High on Fire’s Matt Pike, and Scott “Wino” Weinrich from The Obsessed/Spirit Caravan/Hidden Hand/Saint Vitus/Shrinebuilder/etc.

In fact, part of this Bill Kelliher interview, which tells the tale of how he wound up working with Lace to design his new signature “Dissonant Aggressors” pickups, is dedicated to the importance of midrange. It should go without saying, but there’s sadly not enough of the frequency in modern metal.

Chris Alfano has written about music and toured in bands since print magazines and mp3.com were popular. Once in high-school he hacked a friend's QBasic stick figure fighting game to add a chiptune metal soundtrack. Random attractive people still give him high-fives about that.
