One of my favorite albums so far this year is Sumac’s The Deal. In case you’re completely un-cvlt, this band is the new project from ISIS/Hydra Head/Old Man Gloom/gear-dad Aaron Turner, absurdly good drummer Nick Yacyshyn of Baptists, and absurdly doom Brian Cook of Russian Circles/Botch/These Arms Are Snakes/etc.
I spoke at length with Nick and Aaron earlier this year (read that interview here), and have been overall pretty excited about this project. Nick is one of my favorite drummers, and it’s great to see a player like him reinvigorate Aaron’s writing, and take their collective creative influence in a new direction. Although Brian wasn’t a huge part of the writing process, Aaron assured us that he is by no means a side-man, and that he will play an important part in the band’s trajectory moving forward.
Obviously. They’ve been playing some shows recently in the West Coast/West Canada area, which our bros at Not Your Scene and CVLT Nation were kind enough to shoot some dirty footage of. Check out the performance of “Thorn in the Lion’s Paw” below, featuring shots from the always entertaining Nick-cam:
The Deal is out now on Profound Lore. Get it here.
