German progressive metal band The Ocean have been torchbearers in the progressive metal arena ever since the release of their 2007 record Precambrian. Now, as the band gears up to release their next double album Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic, we’ve been able to sneak behind-the-scenes and catch a glimpse of some of the goings-on that went into this behemoth of a record.
In this vlog #2 (check out the first installment here) Guitarist Robin Staps gives a great explanation of the process of writing the material, recording/reamping guitars, recording instruments like cello and horns, and preparing for their 10th Anniversary Precambrian Tour. Needless to say, the group has been busy, and we can’t wait to hear this thing in its entirety.
You can pre-order Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic through the Metal Blade website, and you’ll want to do so soon because it drops November 2nd. The band will also be doing an AMA on Reddit (r/progmetal) this Thursday the 11th as well, so be sure to tune in at 7:00 pm CEST/1: 00 pm EDTÂ to shoot ’em some questions!
