Revocation’s Headless Dave Davidson Returns to School You on Minor 7 Flat 5 Chords

7th chords are my favorite chords. Well, besides 2nd chords, and 9ths which are like 2nd chords on steroids. But 7ths are pretty rad too. I guess anything that harmonizes a step off the root in either direction just has an inherent badassness.

Dave Davidson, he of Revocation and more importantly, this “Thrash Course with Dave Davidson” lesson, seems to agree. Watch in the video below as he goes over some possible applications for the almighty 7th chord. After all, At the Gates are back together, and they’ve reclaimed all of the 3rds. It’s time to move on to new horizons.

Chris Alfano has written about music and toured in bands since print magazines and mp3.com were popular. Once in high-school he hacked a friend's QBasic stick figure fighting game to add a chiptune metal soundtrack. Random attractive people still give him high-fives about that.

  • Just wait until you discover the #11.

    • Nah dude, minor 10ths are actually where it’s at. It’s like you’re harmonizing in thirds with your bassist, but YOU’RE also the bassist.

      • But… Split thirds/10ths! Gotta have that dissonance. Split thirds also sound great under a major 7th or a minor 9th. Then add a sharp fourth/ over that… Sorry. I got carried away.
