Des Moines-based psychedelic metal band Druids are just about to release their long-awaited newest record Monuments on April 19th via The Company. Fusing together the sounds of bands like Mastodon, Red Fang, and King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard, the 3-piece have a way of creating something new from the familiar, and that is what we love about them. And that is especially apparent here in this playthrough by guitarist and vocalist Luke Rauch for their brand new song “The Whip”! Watch, listen, and be amazed, only right here, on Gear Gods!
One of my favourite things about this track is how cohesive yet expansive the overall sound is. It’s got all the great elements of classic stoner riffage and raw, emotional vocals, and is wrapped up in the subtle-yet-effective melodic and rhythmic sensibilities of 60’s surf-rock. Whether it’s intentional or not, these guys have a refreshing yet comforting sonic aesthetic that warrants many listens to truly appreciate.
Here’s what Luke had to say about this track:
“I had the riffs [for this song] recorded on my phone for a good year before I brought it to the band. I brought the riffs to the band while we were gathering ideas for Monument and we arranged it all in one night. We just ran with the wildness of the riffs and let the song write itself.”
As for the gear featured in the video, Luke stated:
“I used my Bilt El Hombre and Orange TH100 with an Orange PPC412 cab for the video.”
