It’s been far too long since we’ve gotten a Devin Townsend guitar playthrough. In the last year, we’ve gotten puppet shows, memes, cartoons, three albums, guitars that shoot lasers, and more, but rare was the chance to just sit back and watch the man play.
Which he does in this video, brought to you by one of Devy’s perpetual gear partners, Toontrack, for the song “By Your Command” off the first Ziltoid the Omniscient album. What’s really the most fun thing about watching this video is getting to see him really feel out those guitar parts – I feel like when he’s onstage, with the adrenaline pumping and a crowd of dudes smiling at him, there’s other things to think about besides riffs. And he writes such unique lines, so it’s cool to see him react to the melodies.
Also of note is that Devy retracked the guitars for this playthrough, and remixed the drum, using tones he designed in Toontrack’s Metal Guitar Gods EZmix Pack for EZmix 2, EZdrummer 2 and the Made of Metal EZX.
