Universal Audio has announced six new Volt Gen 2 audio interfaces, updating its entry-level recording lineup with additional tone-shaping options, smarter monitoring features, and a refreshed design. The range spans the compact Volt 1 Gen 2 at $149 through the Volt 4P Max at $499.
All six interfaces support recording at up to 32-bit/192kHz and work with Mac, Windows, iPad, and iPhone devices. Each is USB bus-powered and includes UA’s new Tone Shaping Preamps, with three selectable modes: Warmth, inspired by tube designs; Focus, based on solid-state preamps; and Shine, modeled after British Class A circuitry.
Five models also feature full-color Smart Displays for monitoring input levels and gain reduction. Auto-Gain and Clip Protection are included to simplify gain staging, while automatic source detection helps users configure microphone, line, and instrument inputs.
The three Volt Max models — Volt 2 Max, Volt 4 Max, and Volt 4P Max — add six digital compression presets inspired by 1176, LA-2A, and VCA-style compressors. Universal Audio says the processing runs in real time without added latency, and the compression presets can be combined with the preamp modes for more than 18 tonal combinations per channel.
The Volt 4 Gen 2 and all three Max models also include MIDI I/O and ADAT connectivity for expanded studio setups. The Max range adds a built-in talkback microphone, while the Volt 4 Max and Volt 4P Max include speaker switching.
The redesigned interfaces trade the previous generation’s retro wooden side panels for a minimalist gray finish. Each model also comes with the UAD Volt Studio Bundle, which includes 15 plugins, UA’s Luna DAW, Celemony’s Melodyne Essential, and a three-month trial of FL Studio Producer Edition.
