The magicians at Strymon have once again stepped into uncharted delay territory. The new Olivera Oil Can Echo pedal resurrects the haunting, liquid ambience of vintage Tel-Ray units — and then supercharges it with 21st-century precision. The result is a dark, warbly, time-bending echo engine that’s as unpredictable as it is inspiring.
Classic oil-can delays used a small rotating can filled with conductive fluid to produce their unmistakable, murky repeats. Strymon’s R&D team captured that elusive character in meticulous detail, crafting a new DSP algorithm that nails the wobble, modulation, and lo-fi warmth of the originals — all while adding the reliability and range of modern digital design.
The Heads Control lets you switch between two simulated playback heads or use both for lush, layered ambience. With Time controls spanning 200–800 ms and the Intensity and Regeneration knobs shaping modulation depth and feedback behavior, Olivera can move from lopsided, vintage flutter to massive, evolving soundscapes that feel alive.
Strymon’s trademark JFET Class A preamp ensures pristine dynamics and a wide frequency response, maintaining analog warmth while minimizing noise. Independent left/right channel processing and true stereo I/O make the Olivera equally at home in mono pedalboards or expansive stereo rigs.
A dual-purpose TRS jack handles both Expression and MIDI, while USB-C connectivity gives players full DAW integration — complete control, preset management, and editing of all 300 onboard patches. And as always, you can choose between premium buffered bypass or electromechanical relay true bypass, depending on your signal chain preferences.
