Ambient guitarists have no shortage of reverb pedals to choose from, but the Walrus Audio Lüm Texture Engine Pedal takes a decidedly different approach.
Rather than simply adding depth or space, Lüm fractures your signal into microscopic sonic fragments, combining granular processing with expansive reverb algorithms to create evolving soundscapes that blur the boundaries between guitar effects and ambient synthesis.
And if you’re thinking you’ve heard this before, you have! Walrus Audio originally dropped the Lüm back in September 2025, but now they’ve added it to their permanent rotation.
At the heart of Lüm are three unique processing modes, each offering its own take on granular ambience:
- Mode I – Grain Cloud transforms your signal into a shimmering field of granular textures generated from dual taps reading a feedback delay line. The X control adjusts grain size, determining how frequently the pedal introduces its characteristic glitches and fragmented repeats. Paired with modulation, delay, or other ambient effects, Grain Cloud can create constantly evolving pads and cinematic textures.
- Mode II – Grain Verb embeds those same granular fragments directly within a lush reverb engine. Rather than floating above the reverb, every grain becomes part of the wash itself, resulting in dense, immersive ambience that excels at atmospheric clean tones. Interestingly, Walrus Audio also recommends placing Lüm before high-gain pedals in this mode, producing uniquely saturated textures that retain surprising clarity.
- Mode III – Forward/Reverse Verb combines two contrasting reverb algorithms into a rhythmic conversation between conventional and reverse ambience. The Stretch control alters the speed of that interaction, while the X knob adjusts the reverse reverb decay, allowing everything from subtle movement to dramatic, swelling soundscapes.
Beyond its ambient capabilities, Lüm introduces several performance-oriented features designed with live players in mind.
Its Moment function allows users to temporarily automate any one of the pedal’s five primary controls by holding the dedicated footswitch, smoothly morphing between parameter settings without interrupting performance. Automation speed can be adjusted via three selectable Ramp times, ranging from an almost instantaneous 10 milliseconds to gradual transitions lasting up to five seconds.
Another standout addition is the Stretch Engine, which globally shifts the pedal’s sample rate anywhere between half-speed and double-speed operation. This dramatically alters the behavior of the granular engine, affecting grain size, reverb decay, and overall tonal character while opening the door to entirely new textures.
For players who rely on multiple ambient sounds throughout a set, Lüm includes three onboard presets. Better still, preset changes transition seamlessly, eliminating the abrupt jumps that often plague complex digital effects.
Users can also choose between Trails mode, allowing reverb tails to naturally decay after bypassing the effect, or Instant Cut mode for sharply defined stops better suited to rhythmic playing.
