WALRUS AUDIO Has A Unique Take On Compression With Their New Highpoint Pedal

The Walrus Audio Highpoint Analog Optical Compressor aims squarely at delivering studio-grade control in a format built for everyday playing. Positioned within the Monarch Series alongside the Meraki Analog Stereo Delay and Mantle Bass Preamp//DI, Highpoint is designed as a an always-on tone shaper that enhances feel as much as sound.

At its core, Highpoint uses analog optical compression, prized for its smooth, musical response. Though what separates Highpoint from traditional stompbox compressors is its depth of control.

A full suite of parameters — Attack, Release, and Ratio — puts detailed shaping at your fingertips, allowing you to fine-tune everything from subtle leveling to more pronounced dynamic control.

The standout here is the Blend control, enabling true parallel compression. This lets you mix your dry signal with the compressed one, preserving pick attack and transient clarity while adding sustain and harmonic density underneath.

Internally running at ±15VDC, Highpoint offers significantly increased headroom compared to standard pedals. That translates to greater dynamic range, improved clarity, and the ability to handle aggressive playing without collapsing or distorting.

One of Highpoint’s most distinctive features is its 10-LED VU-style metering array. Players can toggle between Input, Output, and Gain Reduction views, effectively turning the pedal into a miniature mastering console.

For players working with extended-range guitars or bass, the onboard sidechain High-Pass Filter is a game changer. By filtering out frequencies at 160Hz and below from triggering compression, the pedal prevents low-end content from overwhelming the circuit. The result is tighter bass response, clearer note definition, and preserved punch.
