MXPX’s MIKE HERRERA Strips It Down With His New STERLING BY MUSIC MAN Bass

Born from decades on the road with punk rock veterans MxPx, the Sterling by Music Man Mike Herrera Artist Series StingRay refines the classic design down to its essentials.

The bass features a single passive ceramic humbucker that delivers a punchy, articulate tone without the need for batteries or additional circuitry. Its control section follows Herrera’s longtime setup: one functional volume knob accompanied by two nonfunctional “dummy” knobs, preserving the familiar StingRay aesthetic while maintaining the artist’s minimalist approach.

Visually, the instrument stands out with its Orange Creamsicle finish and color-matched headstock, giving it a distinct, vintage-inspired character. The White Pearloid pickguard features the custom “Pokinatcha” MxPx graphic, a nod to the band’s debut album and Herrera’s roots in the punk scene.

The StingRay body shape remains true to its ergonomic heritage, offering balanced weight distribution, smooth contours, and a comfortable playing experience. Constructed from Jabon wood, the body provides resonance and durability, while the Hard Maple neck and fingerboard ensure stability and a bright tonal response. A 34-inch scale length, 9.5-inch neck radius, and 21 medium frets deliver a familiar feel and reliable playability across the fingerboard.

Additional features include open-gear tuning machines, a dual-action truss rod, and a six-bolt neck attachment for enhanced stability. The instrument’s fixed bridge ensures precise intonation and consistent tuning under heavy playing conditions.
