Of all of Mapex’s new offerings for 2015, I’m most intrigued by the Matt Halpern signature Wraith snare drum. Like it’s title cheekily implies, this is a drum that is designed for pronounced ghost note sensitivity, which it accomplishes in part by drying out the air in the drum via its cool-as-shit air vents. Which are, of course, in the shape of the Periphery logo.

We caught up with Mapex’s Joe Hibbs to talk about the Wraith drum, as well as some of the company’s other cool products for 2015, including their Saturn 5 drum series. We also spoke with Hibbs a bit about the further development of the Soniclear Bearing Edge technology, which are designed to make tuning easier, preserve tone, and increase tom sustain.
