If you’re a big fan of the long-standing Gibson Thunderbird bass model, great news! They’re bringing it back. And if you’ve always hated the long-standing Gibson Thunderbird bass model, terrible news! They’re bringing it back.
Originally introduced in 1963, the Thunderbird broke every convention. Designed by automotive stylist Ray Dietrich, it featured sweeping curves, an offset silhouette, and a futuristic aesthetic. The original Thunderbird was Gibson’s first bass to employ a Neck-Through-Body construction and a full 34″ scale length, setting a new standard for sustain, resonance, and low-end authority. This modern iteration pays homage to that legacy while adapting the formula for contemporary performance.

At the core of the new model is a solid Mahogany body sculpted into the classic Reverse shape, complete with a raised center section that nods to the original neck-through design. While this version utilizes a glued-in Set Mahogany neck, it retains the tonal richness and sustain players expect from the Thunderbird lineage.
The neck itself is carved into a SlimTaper profile, offering a fast, comfortable feel that encourages fluid movement across the fretboard. Whether you’re locking into tight grooves or exploring melodic runs, the neck responds with speed and precision.

Modern hardware upgrades bring the Thunderbird firmly into the present. Hipshot Ultralite Mini Clover tuners improve balance and reduce headstock weight, addressing one of the classic concerns associated with the design. At the bridge, the Hipshot Supertone system offers full intonation control and adjustable action height, giving players the ability to fine-tune their setup with precision.
Tonally, the Thunderbird remains every bit as formidable as its name suggests. A pair of EB Bass Humbucker pickups delivers a deep, commanding low end with plenty of punch and clarity. These are not subtle pickups—they’re built to move air and anchor a mix.

Independent Volume controls for each pickup allow for nuanced blending, while a Master Tone control provides additional shaping. From thick, woolly lows to more articulate, cutting textures, the Thunderbird covers a surprisingly wide sonic range without losing its core identity.
Aesthetically, the bass stays true to its roots while offering fresh visual appeal. The Ebony finish exudes classic, understated power, while Tobacco Burst Perimeter adds a vintage-inspired edge with modern flair. Both are complemented by the signature 3-Ply White pickguard, complete with the iconic Thunderbird logo.
