DINGWALL’s JACOB UMANSKY Signature Bass: A Multi-Scale Powerhouse Built for Modern Virtuosity

Dingwall Guitars has never been about compromise, and the Jacob Umansky Signature Bass is a clear reflection of that philosophy. Purpose-built for the demands of professional touring and studio work, this 6-String multi-scale instrument delivers exceptional ergonomics, clarity, and tonal authority – while remaining versatile enough to thrive far beyond the boundaries of progressive metal.

Handcrafted by the experienced luthiers of the Dingwall Custom Shop, the Jacob Umansky Signature combines top-shelf tonewoods with a sleek, comfortably contoured body that feels immediately intuitive in the hands. Finished in Natural Satin, the bass presents a refined, understated aesthetic that puts the focus squarely on performance.

At the core of the instrument is Dingwall’s renowned fanned-fret, multi-scale design. By assigning each string its own optimized scale length, the bass achieves consistent tension and feel across all six strings. The result is a remarkably even response from the lowest fundamentals to the highest register—no flabby low strings, no stiff highs.

This “well-tempered” approach also enhances ergonomics. The angled frets follow the natural arc of the fretting hand, reducing strain during extended sessions and making complex passages feel more fluid and controlled. For players tackling demanding technical runs, wide interval stretches, or aggressive slap techniques, the benefits are immediate and undeniable.

Electronics are equally uncompromising. At Jacob Umansky’s request, the bass is loaded with three FDV humbuckers, delivering a massive sonic footprint defined by authoritative low end, articulate mids, and shimmering top-end clarity. These pickups are known for their transparency, allowing the natural voice of the instrument to shine through without compression or congestion.

The pickups are routed through Dingwall’s Quad-Tone selector, offering four distinct configurations: Bridge Only, Bridge + Middle, Middle Only, and All Three Pickups. Combined with passive Master Volume and Tone controls, this setup provides a vast tonal palette before even engaging the onboard preamp.

Engaging the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp unlocks another level of sonic control. Unlike traditional bass preamps, the Tone Capsule focuses on Low, Mid, and High-Mid frequencies (each with a ±12dB range) carefully chosen to shape bass tone where it matters most.
