This year has already been one of the best in metal/punk that I can remember, but this Fall things are looking to head to another level. In the span of two months, we will get albums from Opeth, Dysrhythmia, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, Trap Them, and of course, Meshuggah.
The new ‘shuga (that’s what the kids call it, Dad) is entitled The Violent Sleep of Reason, and in addition to being an utterly sick title, the new track that they’ve just dropped, “Born in Dissonance,” is really good. Like really, really good. While Metallica are off hardwiring a ’67 Camaro, Meshuggah just ripped open the pod bay doors of a Stanley Kubrick space-exploration conspiracy. One of the things I’m most excited about with this album is the band tracked it live in the studio – a true rarity in “easy” metal, and almost unheard of for stuff of this caliber. And it shows!

“Born in dissonance” IMO is an underwhelming track. I was a little disappointed to hear Jens’ taking a different approach vocally. But I am truly excited to hear the remainder of the new album.
