Calm Down And Watch Dale Crover Play A New Melvins Song

It’s really on us for basically never having written anything about the Melvins, one of the greatest bands of all time and influence on some of the gems of the last twenty years or so in metal, like Mastodon, Neurosis, ISIS, and more. This is doubly offensive because Dale Crover is just, simply put, one of the best drummers to ever sit on the throne.

I know it may be difficult for some of our younger readers to come to terms with that sentence, but I really recommend taking time to listen carefully to Crover’s playing on albums like Stoner Witch, Bullhead, Houdini, or Stag, and take note of a number of things: his spacing, his groove, his sense of time, and his way of playing to the song. The latter is particularly of note, as the Melvins songs are pretty different from what you’re probably used to.

All this to say, this band has been doing it for years and seeing them play is a treat. The following drum footage, courtesy our pals at Sick Drummer Magazine, doesn’t really capture at all the majesty of seeing this guy play in the flesh… but its still Crover, and it’s new Melvins!

Check the clip out, for the song “Captain Comedown” off the band’s new physical-only release EP with Le Bucherettes Chaos As Usual:
