A riff may not be a song – but you CAN make a whole song starting from a single riff.
I’m gonna show you how – but I need a riff. ONE riff.
Not just any riff –
I need the HEAVIEST RIFF IN THE UNIVERSE. And one of you is going to write it for me, and the person whose riff I pick is gonna win a sick prize pack from Toontrack!
I know, I know… I must be nuts.
Another contest?
This one’s gonna be a bit different though – I’m keeping it REAL simple.
So here’s how this will work. You have ONE WEEK to send me ONE RIFF. No reaction videos this time, no gongs, no critiques, nothing.
You’re going to write a riff and make a video of yourself playing it. Tell me your name, the tempo of the riff, the time signature, and the tuning of your guitar.
The riff needs to be no more than 4 bars long. 4 measures. Any key, any tempo, any time signature.
You’re going to upload the video to YouTube and submit it using the entry form at the bottom of this post. Include the hashtag #heaviestriffintheuniversecontest in the video title. All entries must be available on YouTube.
I’m going to listen to your riffs and pick the best one, then I’m going to make a video where I write a whole song from your riff!
The winner will also receive a sweet prize pack from Toontrack: EZdrummer 2, EZbass, EZmix 2 and the Metal Guitar Gods 3 EZmix pack. The winner will also get to appear in the final video with me (if they want)!
One more thing: if you want to place some drums behind your riff for maximum impact — which you should, to make sure it totally crushes — use Superior Drummer 3 or EZdrummer 2 to lay down the ultimate and most beefy foundation to your riff. If you don’t have a Toontrack drum sampler, you can download the free and fully functioning 10-day demo version of EZdrummer 2 here. Need a bass to go with it? Download the free 10-day trial version of Toontrack’s EZbass here. Be sure to include screen shots of your presets in your video so we can see what you’re using!
So grab your guitar and get crackin – the contest entries close at 11:59pm EDT on Friday, November 12, so you don’t have much time – good luck!
