Sterling by Music Man has brought the iconic StingRay design to the guitar world with the StingRay II, a six-string developed in collaboration with guitarist Cory Wong. The new model takes several of the StingRay bass’s defining visual elements and adapts them for a modern guitar designed around rhythm playing and upper-register access.
The StingRay II features the familiar rounded body, oval pickguard, and oversized headstock, along with a sculpted 5-bolt neck joint and shaped cutaways. An Alder body is paired with a satin-finished, C-shaped Roasted Maple neck, a 12″-radius rosewood fingerboard, and 22 frets on a 25.5″ scale.
Two Sterling by Music Man humbuckers provide the guitar’s primary tones, with a 3-way toggle offering neck, bridge, and combined pickup positions. The straightforward electronics are complemented by locking tuners and a vintage-style tremolo.
Hardware includes locking tuners for tuning stability during bends and tremolo use, along with a vintage-style tremolo that provides a comfortable resting point for the picking hand. A dual-action truss rod with a wheel at the body end of the neck allows for quick neck-relief adjustments.
Frankly, I think this is a pretty cool addition to the Sterling lineup. But this is also coming from a guy that loves the StingRay bass body, so I’m bias.
