Source Audio recently unveiled the Encounter Ambient Delay+Reverb, a new flagship ambient effects pedal that merges expansive reverb processing and richly textured delay effects into a single, performance-focused platform. The Encounter pairs six reverb engines with six delay algorithms, delivering what Source Audio describes as its most immersive collection of atmospheric effects to date.

The six reverbs are:

  1. Leading the reverb lineup is Hypersphere, a newly developed ambient algorithm that imagines reverberation existing without physical boundaries
  2. Shimmers expands on the increasingly popular pitch-shifted reverb formula with dual independent pitch voices that can be assigned intervals above or below the dry signal
  3. Trem Verb combines spacious reverberation with synchronized tremolo modulation
  4. Reverse Reverb recreates the classic studio technique of reversing tape to generate swelling, backwards ambience in real time
  5. Lo-Fi introduces distortion and modulation into the reverb path, giving a nice lo-fi sound
  6. Swell Reverb delivers the volume-swell effects that have become a staple of modern ambient guitar playing

The delay section draws inspiration from several iconic echo units while introducing a number of original effects. Those are:

  1. Noise Tape traces its lineage back to the tape delay section of the Roland Space Echo, offering everything from clean repeats to heavily degraded, modulation-rich tape textures
  2. Drum Echo takes cues from the legendary Echorec drum echo, recreating its rhythmic multi-head patterns while adding modern controls that allow players to adjust the amount of ambient wash generated by the repeats
  3. Kaleidoscope is a newly developed effect that transforms delay repeats into shimmering, harp-like cascades spread across the frequency spectrum
  4. Resonant delay returns from the company’s Nemesis Delay platform with additional filtering options
  5. EchoVerb blends digital delay and Plate-style reverb into a single ambient engine.
  6. Helix offers an updated version of another Nemesis favorite that combines octave-shifted and reverse delay processing with expanded pitch options and selectable repeat behaviors

Neuro integration unlocks deeper customization

As with other recent Source Audio releases, the Encounter’s full potential is accessed through Neuro 3, the company’s free editing platform available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices.

Through Neuro, players can access additional pitch assignments, modulation options, tremolo waveforms, delay patterns and routing configurations, while also downloading and sharing presets with other users.

Inputs and Outputs

Beyond its effects engines, the Encounter arrives with a feature set aimed squarely at contemporary pedalboard users.

The pedal offers true stereo inputs and outputs, independent on/off footswitches for delay and reverb sections, onboard tap tempo functionality and up to 128 MIDI-accessible presets, with eight directly accessible from the pedal itself.

Additional features include Source Audio’s Universal Bypass system, allowing users to choose between true bypass, soft bypass and buffered operation, alongside an Analog Dry Through signal path that preserves the instrument’s unaffected tone.

A dedicated Knobs Lock switch also prevents accidental parameter changes during live performances by freezing control positions once settings have been dialed in.
