MXR has teamed up once again with Zakk Wylde for a new limited-edition take on his signature overdrive pedal. The Zakk Sabbath Overdrive arrives dressed in a striking finish inspired by Wylde’s Black Sabbath tribute band, Zakk Sabbath – in other words, it’s really purple.
Beneath the exclusive artwork, the pedal retains the same proven circuitry that has made the Wylde Audio Overdrive a favorite among guitarists (and maybe bassists). Designed around Wylde’s playing style, the pedal is engineered to deliver the loud, aggressive gain structure needed for Wylde’s trademark riffs while still maintaining the articulation and punch required for lead work.

The straightforward control layout keeps things simple, offering just three knobs – Output, Tone and Gain – allowing players to get straight to the business of making noise. And also not screw anything up while they’re on stage, which is nice.
As with his longtime stage setup, Wylde often uses the pedal to boost an already dirty amp, creating screaming lead tones packed with sustain and harmonic richness. The result is a versatile overdrive capable of everything from muscular hard-rock rhythms to searing solos that refuse to fade away.
The original MXR Wylde Audio Overdrive was released a few years back to the 20th anniversary of the explosive collaboration between Dunlop and Zakk Wylde. That one was Silver, this one’s Purple – other than that, they’re both the same. Though personally, I’d go for the Purple one because it looks cooler.
