At its heart, HalfLife combines three distinct effects into a single unit. An analog octave circuit inspired by the legendary Shin-Ei FY-2 and FY-6 designs feeds into a distortion stage based on the revered “White Face” rodent-style circuit before hitting a powerful clean MOSFET boost.

The analog octave circuit sits at the front of the signal path and can be blended in gradually using the dedicated Octave control.

As with traditional analog octave-up effects, it performs best with single-note lines played higher up the neck, producing the snarling, overtone-rich textures associated with classic Super Fuzz-style sounds. The addition of an expression pedal allows players to sweep the octave effect in real time.

The distortion section expands on the classic formula with a three-way clipping switch that offers dramatically different responses. Players can select an OpAmp mode that removes clipping diodes entirely for maximum output, an asymmetrical clipping mode that combines silicon diodes and an LED for a smoother response, or a symmetrical silicon diode configuration that delivers a nice, compressed crunch.

The final stage of the pedal is the Magnitude booster, an all-discrete MOSFET circuit designed not to color the signal but to deliver enough output to slam the front end of a tube amplifier into harmonic-rich overdrive.

Both the octave distortion and boost circuits feature dedicated footswitches, allowing them to be activated independently. The signal path flows from Octave to Distortion to Boost, providing players with a highly flexible gain structure that can function as anything from a straightforward distortion pedal to a complete front-end tone-shaping system.
