Swedish doom heavyweights Monolord have joined forces with Dunable Guitars to unveil a pair of new signature instruments: the USA Custom Gnarwhal for guitarist Thomas Jäger and the R2 Bass for bassist Mika Hakki.
“Mika and I have been playing our Dunables for a couple of years now and to get your own instrument with your own specifications, it’s pure magic,” Jäger says. “These instruments came out great and we’re absolutely stoked.”
Hakki adds: “After years of using and owning several Dunable Guitars, it’s a great privilege to be part of the Dunable team with this amazing instrument. When Sacha Dunable asked us what color options we wanted for the instruments, I just saw this sick scorched bass in my mind, and he got probably equally as stoked on the idea as we did. Great minds twist alike!”
Dunable USA Custom Gnarwhal: Built for Crushing Doom Riffs
Jäger’s Dunable USA Custom Gnarwhal is built around a 24.75″ scale length and features a Mahogany neck paired with an Ebony fingerboard and 22 jumbo nickel frets. The body is crafted from charred Swamp Ash and finished in satin lacquer. Luminlay side dots provide visibility on dark stages, while Graph Tech hardware, including a Tusq nut and Ratio tuners, ensures stable tuning under heavy playing conditions.
Electronics are simple: a single high-wind Lollar P-90 soapbar pickup delivers everything from articulate cleans to thick, saturated distortion, controlled by a lone volume knob.
Dunable R2 Bass: Two Distinct Voices for Mika Hakki
Hakki’s signature R2 Bass is offered in two distinct configurations, each tailored to different tonal philosophies while sharing the same foundational design. Both versions feature a 35″ scale length, Ebony fingerboard, 22 jumbo frets, and a charred Swamp Ash body – but then things diverge.
The first variant is equipped with dual Dunable Katana single-coil-style black foil pickups and is paired with a straightforward control layout of two volume knobs and a tone control.
The second variant adopts a more traditional approach with a Dunable D-Split neck pickup and D-J bridge pickup combination. This configuration offers a broader tonal range, from warm low-end fundamentals to more familiar split-coil articulation. Both bass models utilize Leo Quan Badass bridges and clover tuners for rock-solid stability.
