Throwback Thursday: UFO Guitarist Vinnie Moore Opens Pepsi Bottles… With Shred

They don’t make them like they used to. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I LOVED Britney Spears’ Pepsi commercials from the early 2000s, especially as a prepubescent red blooded American boy. But back in 1985, Pepsi had the balls (and let’s be honest, artistic gall) to finance and air a commercial in which UFO guitar virtuoso Vinnie Moore was called in to use his shred to open a bunch of Pepsi bottles… when his crew lacked a bottle opener.

This is really special. It may be even better than the House of Guitars commercial from 1978 that featured the Ramones. And I’m sure when Eddie Trunk caught it in between late-night re-runs of Motley Crue videos, he flipped his shit. Check it out:

It also looks like some dude on YouTube, Troy Grady, even uploaded an analysis/lesson of Vinnie Moore’s licks from the commercial. Man.

And of course, check out Britney’s classic Pepsi commercial from 2001. I wish they’d give this kind of budget to like, Tosin Abasi or Ben Weinman to make one of these:
