Boss has introduced the EX-4 Effects Expander, a compact stereo multi-effects pedal packing 120 effects into a pedalboard-friendly enclosure. The EX-4 can run up to four effects simultaneously, covering everything from overdrive and distortion to modulation, delay, and reverb.
The library also includes bass-specific effects alongside some of Boss’ more unusual creations like the Slow Gear and Slicer. Five utility blocks — foot volume, two independent noise suppressors, send/return, and divider/mixer – can be placed throughout the signal chain, while a global EQ handles final output shaping.
A color LCD displays all four effect blocks simultaneously, with dedicated FX1 through FX4 buttons, three parameter knobs, and Select and Type/Value controls handling editing. The EX-4 also features two multifunction footswitches with color LEDs and provides 128 user memories alongside 128 factory presets.
For integrating the EX-4 into a larger setup, Boss has included mono/stereo I/O, an effects loop, TRS MIDI input and output, and an external control jack for connecting a footswitch or expression pedal.
Internally, the EX-4 uses 24-bit AD conversion with Boss and Roland’s Adaptive Focus method, 32-bit DA conversion, and 32-bit floating-point processing. Basically, if you’ve got some empty space on your pedalboard but don’t want to fill it with another dozen individual pedals, the EX-4 offers a pretty straightforward solution.
