Ibanez’s Axe Design Lab has taken one of the brand’s most recognizable body shapes and rebuilt it for extended-range playing, stretching the Iceman into a 7-string with a multi-scale fretboard aimed at down-tuned, technically demanding styles.
The body is Okoume, chosen for a bright, solid timbre with strong natural sustain. The multi-scale design runs 27.2″ at the low B string down to 25.5″ on the treble side, a setup meant to tighten low-end response while keeping the high strings feeling familiar under the fretting hand. Ibanez frames the approach as matching scale length to the natural angle of the fretting hand’s movement — longer scale on the bass side for added tension and punch, shorter scale on the treble side for accurate intonation and comfortable single-string playing.
Handling neck duties is a 5-piece Maple/Walnut Wizard II-7 neck, one of Ibanez’s faster profiles, paired with a 24-fret Ebony fingerboard loaded with jumbo frets for wide bends and fast runs. Hardware includes a Mono-rail G2 bridge and Gotoh MG-T locking tuners for stability across seven strings.
Electronics come from a pair of Fishman Fluence Modern Ceramic humbuckers, each offering two selectable voices via a push-pull switch on the master volume. The first voice leans into a modern active-pickup character with tight bass and crisp highs, while the second is a higher-output voicing built specifically for distortion. Both run without the added noise typical of traditional high-output pickups, and a 3-way toggle handles switching between the neck and bridge positions.
