The Weekly Riff: Magrudergrind, “Sacrificial Hire”

I’ve been waxing poetic on the new Magrudergrind, a no-contest contender for my favorite album released so far this year. It’s a serious step forward for the band in almost every respect: the songwriting is tight, the grooves kick, and the production (by Kurt Ballou) walks the oh-so-fine line between gross chaos and clear concision.

Part of this growth was due to the band’s incorporation of a variety of new influences – from Swedish death metal-esque guitar tones to Japanese hardcore grooves. We caught up with guitarist R.J. Ober at the Gibson New York Showroom a few weeks back to talk about riffs, and recorded a little video lesson and interview for you guys. Check it out below:
