Although drummers have it rougher in this department, getting your first guitar rig together can be an expensive task. Luckily the gear market has really exploded lately and there are companies making rigs for all budgets, at much higher levels of quality than have been available in the past.
In this video, me and my brother from another country Pete Cottrell go through Thomann’s massive gear collection to try to put together a decent, giggable metal rig for under 500€ (currently $583 USD). I think we did a pretty good job, considering that it’s hard to get even a guitar or amp head alone for that price.
