RIGGED – DEAFHEAVEN Guitarists Share Their Tone Secret Sauce

The Post-Blackened Ambient Indiegaze pioneers in Deafheaven know how to pull a pretty grim Black Metal tone. So Premier Guitar recently cornered the band’s guitarists, Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra (I assume that is his prison name), for this neat guided tour of their setups.

I’ve always felt that the guitar sounds on albums like Sunbather have just the right amount of ‘bleak frost’ ultra-verb combined with a modern mid-ranged gain that cuts through the mix. And, judging by their setup here, that “modern” edge is all from their reliance on the 6505’s for distortion. Which is pretty much the opposite of that old school, ‘white noise generator’, distortion pedal tone you’d expect from a band in the Black Metal genre. Solid choice in avoiding that mess IMO.

How sick are those custom Dunable guitars too. I don’t even like “shape” guitars, but this V is noice.

Deafheaven are heading out on a tour of Europe, North America and the UK in the coming months. Head over to their Facebook page for dates.
