How To Write A Song – For Beginners!

Writing songs of any kind is my favorite thing to do. Sure, I write complex progressive metal songs now, but I started with 4-chord punk anthems (that were terrible) and have written everything from folk songs for movie soundtracks to upbeat pop music, music for orchestra, and ska. There’s only 12 notes, people – music genres have a lot more in common than they are different.

Learning to write any kind of music starts with the basics – a couple chords, and some kind of melody. In this video, I show YouTuber Jenny James (who has never written a song before) how to write a song with simple tools she already has. You, too, can write a song if you know even just a few chords on your instrument and have the patience to do a little trial and error!

As Editor-in-Chief of Gear Gods, I've been feeding your sick instrument fetishism and trying unsuccessfully to hide my own since 2013. I studied music on both coasts (Berklee and SSU) and now I'm just trying to put my degree to some use. That's a music degree, not an English one. I'm sure you noticed.
