The Weekly Riff – White Widows Pact, “Hangman”

One of my favorite records from this month is True Will by White Widows Pact. Although I loved the band’s debut EP, it’s really the sound of a band coming together, and didn’t quite capture the heavy depths that this band delivers onstage.

True Will shows the band at the next stage, and benefits immensely from production by Dean Baltulonis (Sick of It All, Modern Life Is War) at the Wild Arctic studio, and a gorgeously dark master by Brad Boatright (Baptists, Nails, High on Fire, Young and in the Way).

White Widows Pact are, maybe first and foremost, scholars of the riff. Guitarists Nick Emde and Travis Bacon are some of the most knowledgeable guys I know about Riff History, having cut their teeth in equal parts on black metal, death metal, grind, industrial, and sludge. So we caught up with them to get a demonstration of one of their toasted-to-a-crisp riffs on the track “Hangman.” Check it out below:

True Will is out now via New Damage Records. Snag it here.
